Why We Skip Valentine’s Flowers (and What to Do Instead)

Think we’re crazy for skipping Valentine’s flowers? You not (completely) wrong—it's usually the most lucrative date in a florist’s calendar. But at Kemlo & Kemlo, it just doesn’t fit with our ethos. Here’s the honest truth: In February, our cutting garden, just like your garden at home, is very much in hibernation. Yes, the bulbs are just peeking through the cold hard soil (or very very sodden soil this year!) but nothing much is in bloom. Sending flowers at this time usually means they’ve traveled halfway around the world or been grown in heated greenhouses—usually wrapped in copious layers of plastic and treated with chemicals. Not exactly our style. Not exactly romantic.

But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to show love without importing blooms. One of my personal favourites? Gifting books—a lovely Catalonian Valentine’s tradition. Or think bulbs or seeds to plant together. Better still, why not gift a subscription to regular deliveries of local flowers for later in the year. A seasonal surprise that keeps on giving can feel even more special than a traditional bouquet. If you’re local to us (Lymington, Hampshire), you can order here: https://www.kemloandkemlo.com/store/p/seasonal-flower-delivery-gift-voucher, or if you’re out of our catchment, you can search for a more local supplier here: https://www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk/find-flowers/

Let’s be honest: February is a bit of a crazy month for a celebration that’s synonymous with flowers—so before you order blooms wrapped in plastic, sprayed with chemicals, and flown halfway around the world, maybe we can all think twice… and while we’re at it, can we please make a bid to move Valentine’s Day?
